The Forty Makkan NarrationsUnknown author Monday, September 04, 2006 All perfect praise is due to Allaah; I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad is His Slave and Messenger; may Allaah exalt his mention, as well as his family and all his companions. It is the Wisdom of Allaah Almighty that He favored some nations over others, and some places over others, and some seasons and times over others. On the basis of this distinction, certain rules have been established. Among the places that have been blessed, honored and assigned the greatest share of virtue is Makkah --Umm Al-Quraa—wherein the first House (the Ka’bah) was established for people so that they can worship Allaah Almighty. It is the Qiblah (the direction of prayers) for Muslims; it is the site where the first revelation descended; it is the cradle for the Divine Message and Muslims all over the world are well aware of its distinctive rank and position. Many verses as well as Prophetic narrations highlight its virtues and rank. The compilation of these forty Prophetic narrations comes as an attempt to motivate the Muslims to better glorify the sacred city of Makkah and is meant to be an incentive for Muslims in general, and the residents of Makkah in particular, to preserve the sanctity of this blessed city and a means to restrain and rebuke those who give no heed to the sanctity and security of this city. 1. Abu Tharr, may Allaah be pleased with him, reported: “I asked the Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam: ‘O Messenger of Allaah! Which mosque was first established on the surface of the earth?’ He, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam, said: “The Haram mosque (i.e. Ka’bah in Makkah)” I asked: ‘Which was established next?’ He, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam, replied: “The mosque of Al-Aqsaa (in Jerusalem)” I inquired: ‘How long was the period between them?’ He, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam, said: “Forty years” He, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam, then added: “Wherever (you may be, and) the prayer time becomes due, perform the prayer there, for the best thing is to do so (i.e. to offer the prayers in time)”” [Reported by Imaam Al-Bukhaari]. 2. Ibn ‘Abbaas, may Allaah be pleased with him, reported: “The Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, passed through the valley of Al-Azraq and he, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, said: “Which mountain trail is this?” People said: ‘This is the valley of Al-Azraq’ Thereupon he, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, observed: “(I perceive) It is as if I am looking at Moosaa, may Allaah exalt his mention, descending from the mountain trail uttering Talbiyah loudly (i.e. saying: Here I am O Allaah at your service!)” Then he, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, came to the mountain trail of Harshaa and said: “Which is this mountain trail?” They said: ‘It is the mountain track of Harshaa’. He, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, observed: “It is as if I am seeing Yoonus (Jonah), may Allaah exalt his mention, the son of Mattaa on a well-built red dromedary, with a cloak of wool around him and the rein of his dromedary is made of the fibers of date-palm, and he is uttering Talbiyah loudly (i.e. saying: Here I am O Allaah at your service!)”” [Reported by Imaam Muslim]. 3. Abu Hurayrah, may Allaah be pleased with him, reported that the Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, said: “Do not set out on a journey (for religious devotion) but for the three mosques: for this mosque of mine (at Madeenah) the Sacred Mosque (at Makkah), and the Mosque Al-Aqsaa (Jerusalem)” [Reported by Imaams Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]. 4. Jaabir Ibn ‘Abdullaah, may Allaah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, said: “The prayer in my mosque is one thousand times better than praying elsewhere, except for the Al-Haram (i.e. Ka’bah in Makkah). The prayer in Al-Haram (i.e. Ka’bah in Makkah) is one hundred thousand times better than praying elsewhere” [Reported by Imaams Ahmad and Ibn Maajah]. 5. Ibn ‘Abbaas, may Allaah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, said addressing Makkah: “How good you are as a city and how dear you are to me, and had it not been that your people forced me out of you I would have lived anywhere else” [Reported by Imaams At-Tirmithi, Ibn Maajah and Al-Haakim]. 6. ‘Abdullaah Ibn ‘Uday Ibn Hamraa’, may Allaah be pleased with him, reported: “I saw the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, standing on Al-Hazwarah and saying (addressing Makkah): “I swear by Allaah! You are the best of the land of Allaah, and the dearest of the lands of Allaah to me, and had it not been that your people forced me out of you I would have left you” [Reported by Imaams At-Tirmithi, Ibn Maajah, An-Nasaa’i and Al-Haakim]. 7. Ibn ‘Abbaas, may Allaah be pleased with him, reported that the Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam said: “The most hated people are three types; one who sins in the Haram (i.e. Makkah), a person who seeks to introduce into Islaam a way from the Pre-Islaamic era and a person who tries to kill a Muslim with out due right” [Reported by Imaam Al-Bukhaari]. 8. Ibn ‘Abbaas, may Allaah be pleased with him, reported that the Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, said: “There is no emigration after the conquest (of Makkah) but only Jihad [(striving and fighting in the cause of Allaah) will continue] and good intention. [1]So if you are summoned to fight, go forth. Allaah made this town sacred on the day He created the earth and the heavens; so it is sacred by the sacredness conferred on it by Allaah until the Day of Resurrection and fighting in it was not lawful to anyone before me, and it was made lawful for me only during an hour on one day, for it is sacred by the sacredness conferred on it by Allaah until the Day of Resurrection. Its thorns are not to be cut, its game is not to be molested, and the things dropped are to be picked up only by one who makes a public announcement of it, and its fresh herbage is not to be cut” Al-‘Abbaas, may Allaah be pleased with him, said: “O Messenger of Allaah! Grant us exception in case of rush, for it is useful for their blacksmiths and for their houses” He, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, conceding the suggestion of Al-’Abbaas said: “Except rush.” [Reported by Imaam Al-Bukhaari]. 9. Jaabir Ibn ‘Abdullaah, may Allaah be pleased with him, narrated: “I heard the Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam saying: “It is not permissible for any of you to carry his weapon in Makkah” [Reported by Imaam Muslim]. 10. Anas Ibn Maalik, may Allaah be pleased with him, reported that the Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam said: “There will be no town which Ad-Dajjaal (i.e. the antichrist) will not enter except Makkah and Madeenah; there will be no entrance (road) (of both Makkah and Madeenah) but the angels will be standing in rows guarding it against him, and then Madeenah will shake with its inhabitants thrice (i.e. three earth-quakes will take place) and Allaah will expel all the nonbelievers and the hypocrites from it.” [Reported by Imaams Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]. 11. Al-Haarith Ibn Maalik Ibn Barsaa’, may Allaah be pleased with him, reported: “I heard the Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, say on the day he conquered Makkah: “This town will never be invaded after today until the Day of Resurrection” [Reported by Imaams At-Tirmithi and Ahmad]. 12. أخرجه البخاري Al-Miswar Ibn Makhramah and Marwaan narrated: “Allaah’s Apostle, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, set out at the time of Al-Hudaybiyah (treaty), and when they proceeded for a distance, he said: “Khaalid Ibn Al-Waleed leading the cavalry of Quraysh constituting the front of the army, is at a place called Al-Ghameem, so take the way on the right.” By Allaah, Khaalid did not perceive the arrival of the Muslims till the dust arising from the march of the Muslim army reached him, and then he turned back hurriedly to inform Quraysh. The Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, went on advancing till he reached the Thaniyyah (i.e. a mountainous trail) through which one would go to them (i.e. people of Quraysh). The she-camel of the Prophet sat down. The people tried their best to cause the she-camel to get up but in vain, so they said, “Al-Qaswa’ (i.e. the she-camel’s name) has become stubborn! Al-Qaswaa’ has become stubborn! ” The Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, said: “Al-Qaswaa’ has not become stubborn, for stubbornness is not her habit, but she was stopped by Him Who stopped the elephant.” Then he, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, said: “By the Name of Him in Whose Hands my soul is, if they (i.e. the Quraysh infidels) ask me anything which will respect the ordinances of Allaah, I will grant it to them” The Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam, then rebuked the she-camel and she got up.” [Reported by Imaam Al-Bukhaari].
