Salaat-ul jumu’ah The Friday congregation prayer is one of the cornerstones of the Muslim Community. It is important that we understand its true significance and how it should be observed correctly according to the guifdance of Allah, tabaraka wata’aala. Virtues of Jumu’ah Abu Hurayrah, radiya Allahu ‘anhu, reports that the Messenger of Allah, salla Allahu ‘alayhe wasallam, said ‘The best day on which the sun rises is Friday. (On Friday) Adam was created and on that he was expelled from paradise. And the hour will come to pass on Friday’ [Muslim] Abu Sa’eed and Abu Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah, salla Allahu ‘alayhe wasallam, said ‘On the Jumu’ah there is a time that if a believing slave asks Allah during it for some good, (Allah will definently) give it to him, and that time is after salaat-ul ‘Asr’. [Ahmed]
On making prayer and salutations to the Prophet
Since the day is a blessed day it is only natural that we seek the most from it in supplication. Aws Ibn Aws reported that the Prophet, salla Allahu ‘alayhe wasallam, said ‘The most virtuous of your days is Jumu’ah, on that Adam was created and on that he died. (On that day) the horn will be blown (day of judgment) and the people will be dumbfounded! Increase your prayers upon me, as your prayers upon me will be presented to me….’[Al-Bukharee]
On Gusl, cleaning the teeth, applying perfume and hair oil
Abdullah Ibn ‘Umar narrated that the Messenger of Allah, salla Allahu ‘alayhe wasallam, said ‘Anyone of you attending the Friday prayer should take Gusl (washing the head and the whole body).’[Al-Bukhaaree] Abu Sa’eed reports that the Prophet, salla Allahu ‘alayhe wasallam, said ‘Every Muslim should have Gusl on Friday and wear the best clothing, and if he has perfume he should use it.’[Al-Bukaaree]
On going Early to Salaat-ul Jumu’ah and remaining Silent while the Imaam gives the Khutbah Abu Huraryrah reports that the Prophet said, ‘Whoever makes Gusl on Jumu’ah like the Gusl one makes due to sexual defilement, and then goes to the mosque, it will be as if he sacrificed a camel. If he goes during the second hour, it will be as if he sacrificed a cow. If he goes during the third hour, it will be as if he sacrificed a horned lamb. If he goes during the fourth hour, it will be as if he has sacrificed a hen. And if he goes during the fifth, it will be as if he sacrificed (something like) an egg. When the Imaam comes, the Angels will be present to listen to the remembrance.’ [Al-Bukhaaree] Imam Ash-Shaafi’ee says that the ‘hour’ refers to the hours of the day, whilst Imam Maalik says that they refer to the portions of the hour before the commencement of the Jumu’ah. [fiqh-us Sunnah] Ibn ‘Abbas reports that the Prophet, salla Allahu ‘alayhe wasallam, said ‘Whoever speaks in the Jumu’ah while the Imam is delivering the khutbah (sermon) is like a donkey carrying books, and for those who tell him to be quiet, there will be no reward for the Jumu’ah.’[Ahmad] This Hadeeth clarifies that it is absolutely forbidden to speak during the khutbah, even to tell someone else to be silent! Regarding the Khutbah
Jabir Ibn ‘Abdullaah narrated, a man entered the mosque while the Prophet, salla Allahu ‘alayhe wasallam, was delivering the khutbah on Friday, so he asked him, ‘Have you prayed ?’ The man replied, ‘No.’ So, he said, ‘Get up, and pray two Rak’ahs!’.[Al-Bukhaaree]. This refers to the two rakahs one should pray before sitting in the mosque The sermon should be short, while the prayer should be long
Messenger of Allah, salla Allahu ‘alayhe wasallam, said ‘It is part of man’s understanding that he shortens his sermon and lengthens his prayer.’ [Muslim]
