A Great way to meet lots of muslims and learn about Islam.

A 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit Pakistan and parts of Indiaon Saturday, October 8.  It is currently estimated by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz that 23,000 people have died, another 51,000 are counted as injured, and another 2.5 million people have become homeless due to the damage.  This is mostly around Islamabad, and the numbers are expected to rise as the relief efforts spread to further outlying areas.  Another estimate puts 600,000 people without power or water, many spending their 3rd night without shelter.  There is so much chaos at the moment that relief trucks are being mobbed with people just rushing to grab whatever they can.

as salaamu ‘alaykum,

a small correction if i may add:
the dead, the injured and the homeless are not mainly around Islamabad - as the article describes - but around Muzafarabad, Balakot and the surrounding towns and villages that media haven’t gotten through to yet, neither the pakistani government know about. the people on the ground that we can just about contact for a few minutes at a time give figures between 60 and 99% of lives and homes that are lost.

may Allaah have mercy on those who have died and grant patience to those who have survived. aameen.

walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

jazakallah for adding that; yes, i agree that the majority of the “official” information is through the eyes of mainstream media; the primary source for a lot of it happened to be the Pakistani government, and since Islamabad is the capital, perhaps the damage there is most obvious; but you are correct: many, many villages outlying the cities were reportedly destroyed as well; that is why the article mentions that the damage quoted (by the officials) was around Islamabad specifically, although they expect more “official” numbers to come out as they make formal evaluations of the other areas; also in the case of events like this, it is difficult to sort between the many (and sometimes conflicting) accounts

jazakallah for adding your info; and anyone who can give first hand accounts (family there, etc.) are welcome to post

(everyone else also) please don’t forget to make du’aa for our brothers and sisters
