Fiqh of EidUnknown author Thursday, June 08, 2006 The messenger (saw) said, “there are only two days of celebration, Eid ul Fitr and Eid ul Adha.” It is not allowed to celebrate any other day in the year and it is prohibited to fast on the days of Eid and the day of doubt (the day before ramadhan). Some Mistakes and neglected deeds on Eid • People neglect to celebrate it, to celebrate it is recommended, • Staying awake all night but not for the sake of Allah (swt). We should start making takbir from the beginning of Eid from the night through to the day, and after every salah. It is the sunnah to stay up in Qiyaam in Ibaadah. • To wear something new is sunnah on Eid However people start wearing clothes of the kuffar and they live in extravagance wearing new clothes every day • Neglecting the duties The people who did not fulfil their duties in the month of Ramadhan, Eid is of no importance to them, because the point of eid is to thank Allah for his guidance. • Zakat ul Fitr Zakat ul Fitr is fard upon everyone and can be paid by the head of the household, it serves as kaffarah for any mistakes in Ramadhan and to help those who cannot celebrate Eid like you do, to do so. • Wearing new clothes Abdullah ibn Abbas narrated that the prophet (saw) said, “the way to thank Allah is to wear new clothes on the day of Eid.” • Not breaking the fast You should be sure to eat something after Fajr and before you pray Salatul eid. It is Sunnah to eat an odd number of dates in the morning, 3 or 5 or 7 is the Sunnah. • Driving to the mosque It is the sunnah to walk on the day of Eid as opposed to going by camel or car, also to take your family with you and to go one way and come back another way. • Going out alone It is not the Sunnah to leave your family at home, it is better to wake up early and take the family out with you. • It is recommended to make ghusl for Eid. • It is sunnah to have siwak on Eid • Salatul Jumu’ah If Eid falls on the day of Jumu’ah, we will combine Salatul jumu’ah and Salatul Eid together. • Visiting the graveyards It is not the sunnah to visit the graveyards on eid, this is bid’ah. • Distinguishing between the Muslims The prophet (saw) on the day of eid ensured that there was no distinction between the people, everyone who is Muslim should be celebrating Eid together. • It is sunnah to visit the families on Eid • Eid Mubarak It is bid’ah to say ‘Eid Mubarak’ rather you should say “Taqabalallahu minni wa minkum.’ • Gifts It is recommended to give people gifts on this day. The prophet (saw) said, “Enter happiness into the hearts of your families in this day.” • Gathering It is recommended to have a public gathering for Eid. Eid is a time when people will celebrate together and get reward, and we have the wasilah of Eid – that there is extra reward and barakah on this day, the way there is wasilah in the last 3 rd of the night, in the last 10 days of Ramadhan and throughout the month of Ramadhan. • Takbeeraat of Eid It is recommended to make takbeer loudly after every salah on Eid and also publicly even in the streets on the way to the salah and during the day of Eid, that is because Eid is from the signs of the Deen and this is a prevailing of the Deen. However it is bid’ah to continue the takbeeraat for three days, rather the Eid is only one day and not three. The Takbeer according to the Sunnah is as follows, “Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar, Laa ilaaha illalllahu, Allahu Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar, Wa lillahil Hamd. Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar, Laa ilaaha illalllahu, Allahu Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar, Wa lillahil Hamd. Allahu Akbar Kabeera, Walhamdulillahi Katheera, Wa Subhanallahi Bukratan Wa aseela, Laa ilaaha illallahu Wahdah, Sadaqa Wa’da, Wa Nasara ‘Abdah, Wa A’azza Jundah, Wa hazamal Ahzaaba Wahdah.” Although it is permissible also to say in addition to this, ‘laa ilaaha illallah wa laa na’budu illa iyyah ... etc” and to send salaams to the prophet and his companions, family, wives and children etc, that is not part of the Sunnah.
