‘AL ‘UZLA’ - ISOLATION

Linguistic Meaning

1.  Al-Hajr – to desert

2.  Al-I’bita’ad – to keep away

3.  Al-Khurooj – to go out

4.  Al-‘Azel – to withdraw

Shariah definition of Al-‘Uzla: To keep away and not to interfere with the affairs of society

There are 4 types of isolation

§ Al-‘Uzla al Kufriyyah – The kufr type of isolation

§ Al-‘Uzla al Muharramah – The prohibited type of isolation

§ Al-‘Uzla al Waajibah – The obligatory type of isolation

§ Al-‘Uzla al Mubaahah – The permissible/recommended type of isolation

1. Al-‘Uzla al Kufriyyah – The kufr type of isolation

It is kufr to keep away from Islam and/or to isolate Islam from life’s affairs. Allah (swt) has chosen Islam as the only way of life accepted by Him, and those who choose another way of life are amongst the loser in this world (dunya) and the hereafter (akhira).

﴿ إِنَّ الدِّينَ عِندَ اللّهِ الإِسْلاَمُ ﴾

Surely the only Deen (true religion) in the sight of Allah is Al-Islam: [Surah Al Imran 3:19]

﴿ وَمَن يَبْتَغِ غَيْرَ الإِسْلاَمِ دِينًا فَلَن يُقْبَلَ مِنْهُ وَهُوَ فِي الآخِرَةِ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ ﴾

If anyone is looking for a religion other than Islam, then let it be known that it will not be accepted from him; and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers. [Surah Al Imran 3:85]

﴿ الْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِي وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ الإِسْلاَمَ دِينًا ﴾

Today I have perfected your religion for you, completed my favour upon you and approved Al-Islam as a Deen (way of life for you). [Surah Al Maidah 5:3]

﴿ أَفَحُكْمَ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ يَبْغُونَ وَمَنْ أَحْسَنُ مِنَ اللّهِ حُكْمًا لِّقَوْمٍ يُوقِنُونَ ﴾

By rejecting the Divine Law do they wish to be judged by the laws of ignorance? Who is a better Judge than Allah for those who believe in Him? [Surah Al MAidah 5:50]

2. Al-‘Uzla al Muharramah – The prohibited type of isolation

This type of isolation has six types (originally seven but the first two have been combined)

1.  To isolate yourself from Muslims/Darul Islam

2.  To isolate yourself from your obligations e.g. salah, dawah

3.  To isolate yourself from your duties e.g. rights of parents, rights of children

4.  To isolate yourself from blood relatives i.e. people who will inherit from you (obliged to keep relationship with)

5.  To isolate yourself from the scholars

6.  To isolate yourself from any other responsibility

3. Al-‘Uzla al Wajibah – The obligatory type of isolation

This type of isolation is obliged upon us.

§ From kufr thoughts

§ From the kuffar

§ From bad people

§ From sins and prohibitions

4. Al-‘Uzla al Mubahah – The permissible/recommended type of isolation

§ In the toilet

§ In Qiyaam ul layl - Staying up through the night worshipping to Allah (swt)

What makes people isolated?

1.  The law and order

2.  Sufi-ism – sitting by himself

3.  Secularism

4.  Racism and oppression

5.  Ignorance

6.  Secrecy policy (fake Jihadis)

1.  Correct understanding of Tawheed

2.  Understanding the reality of this life

3.  Practicing what you know

4.  Come out publicly – get rid of shyness
