you are right - you were not born a muslim in the sense that you are one - if everyone was born muslim in the way you are mentioning, there would be no need to tell anyone about it or for anyone to convert, etc.

the concept of “innate” or “natural” religion that muslims are talking about is based off a prophetic statement that states that man is born knowing his lord and believing in one god, yet his parents indoctrinate him with specifics (such as the concept of the trinity or certain rituals inherited from previous generations etc.)

this is a scholarly opinion - and the scholars differ over this (and other) issues so to understand it you’d have to go to the source and find out what evidence they are basing this on
